Ruto condoles families of flood victims, assures Govt will act

President William Ruto has extended his condolences to the families affected by heavy downpours and floods in various parts of the country.

Kwale, Mombasa, Samburu, and Makueni are some of the areas that have been heavily affected by the ongoing rains.

Ruto’s promise

The floods have resulted in the loss of lives and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.

In a statement on his official X platform, Ruto expressed the government’s commitment to taking action to ensure the safety of Kenyan citizens.

“We condole with the families of the victims of the ongoing intense downpours and flooding in some parts of the country. We are pained by the loss of lives in Kwale, Mombasa, Samburu and, lately, Makueni County among other places. The Government will act to secure Kenyans,” said Ruto.

The heavy rains come shortly after Ruto mentioned a change in the Meteorological Department’s forecast regarding El Nino during a church function.

He noted that while significant rains were expected during the short rains period, the change was seen as beneficial for the country’s agricultural sector.

Legislators from the North Eastern region recently urged the government to declare the El Nino rains a national disaster.

They appealed for international assistance to address the humanitarian crisis in the region, where more than 2 million families were at risk of displacement due to the floods.

The MPs specifically called on the national government to play a more significant role in mitigating the effects of the El Nino rains.
