President William Ruto chaired a high-profile African Union meeting in Luanda, Angola.

The meeting focused on urgent reforms aimed at strengthening the continental body and restoring its global influence.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Tuesday, November 26, 2025, Ruto stressed that change within the African Union can no longer be delayed.

“The reform of the African Union is an urgent and necessary step to ensure it advances the African voice and agenda effectively,” Ruto stated.

He warned that failure to act could weaken the institution.

“Without meaningful change, the AU risks becoming ineffective, which would cost us far more in lost opportunity and diminished influence,” he added.

The meeting brought together Heads of State under the African Union Institutional Reform Ad Hoc Committee, with Ruto presiding over discussions that centred on redefining the future of the organisation.

According to Ruto, the reform report focused on eight key priority areas.

These include the revitalisation of peace and security systems, better financing structures, and the operationalisation of the African Court of Justice.

He also admitted the need for streamlining the AU agenda format to improve efficiency and reduce delays in decision-making processes.

“Others are revamping the Pan-African Parliament and categorisation of decisions,” Ruto noted.

Ruto offers assurance

Further areas of concern include the division of labour among AU organs and the restructuring of remaining institutions and offices, therefore creating a more coordinated and responsive structure.

“These reforms are achievable,” Ruto assured, adding that unity among African leaders is crucial for successful implementation.

He also announced that an inclusive summit will be held where Heads of State will contribute their views.

“To make the reform process inclusive, a summit of Heads of State will be held where they will shape a stronger and more responsive Union,” Ruto stated.

The Angola meeting marks a significant step in redefining Africa’s governance path.

However, its success will depend on political goodwill and consistent collaboration among member states.

As Africa faces rising global challenges, the message from Luanda remains clear. The continent must speak with one voice, act with unity, and move forward with purpose.
