Roads Board disburses funds to mitigate possible effects of El Nino rains

The Kenya Roads Board has released funds to help combat possible destructions from the expected El Nino rains.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, October 12, 2023, Director of Rural Roads, Wilson Kosgei, assured Kenyans that funds had been disbursed to effectively mitigate the impact of the forecast El Nino rains.
With the financial support, the board expects that the funds will be effectively utilised and that results will be visible.
“We have disbursed to our road agencies at least 25 per cent of their allocation. So we expect that they have resources in case there will be any emergencies they should be able to move in fast and rectify the situation,” he said.
“If there will be a road that will be cut off or a network that is impassable, it is expected that the issue will be addressed as soon as it happens because resources have already been disbursed to them,” he added.
He, however, noted that only 25 per cent of the funds that should be received have been allocated.
“We have not released the funds fully but at least we have some resources to repair whatever problem comes up from the rains. Allocation is made to this specific road agency so when I talk of 25 percent it is a percentage of the allocation of what is supposed to be received in the financial year,” he added.
The Kenya Meteorological Department recently announced that the anticipated rains expected to begin in the third and fourth week of this month will receive above-average rainfall.
The weatherman also implored the national and county governments to prepare in order to counteract the possible effects.
