Approximately 20,000 households in Maragua, Murang’a county, are set to benefit from a multi-million-shilling water project.

The county, an arid area, has no piped water and residents have been relying on seasonal rivers and colonial dams for water. Muwasco Managing Director Daniel Ng’ang’a said the Sh200 million project will be implemented in phases with the first one being done to a tune of Sh35 million.

Speaking during the commissioning of the project, Ng’ang’a said already, 1,000 households have been connected to piped water and have ample supply for domestic use.

Ng’ang’a revealed that they are sourcing for funds to ensure completion of the project on time.

Company is at the same time working to expand its water treatment plant and get more sources to ensure reliable and constant supply. Currently, Murang’a has a water coverage of about 67 per cent with Kambiti ward recording the least water connections.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata said his administration is supporting the water firm to distribute the commodity, saying residents have suffered for long.
