Residents protest killing of livestock in Naivasha road crash

By , June 17, 2022

Transport on the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu Road was temporarily paralysed after a speeding trailer killed 21 sheep and goats.

Over 50 others were maimed near Oasis Primary School site as the trailer sped away.

In the past year, over 200 animals have been killed on the spot while seeking water at a nearby dam.

Emotions ran high among affected pastoralists, with transport on the busy road paralysed as the owners collected the carcasses.

The Thursday morning incident occurred after a herder drove his flock across the road from the water point. The speeding trailer then knocked them down.

According to a witness Jackson Korinke, the lorry was headed to Naivasha from Mai Mahiu.

While calling for speed bumps, he termed the loss as major, adding that the lorry nearly hit the lone herder.

Other lamentations came from herder Charles Kuntai and witness Dickson Karanja.
