Residents of Uyawi in Bondo Constituency on Tuesday demonstrated over pathetic state of roads leading to the fish landing sites in the area.

The demonstrators claimed most fishermen were counting losses as transporters shy from ferrying their fish produce to the markets citing the deplorable state of roads

They also said insecurity in the beaches in the area was on the rise because of lack of street lights in Lihunda, Uyawi and Ndeda beaches like in other local beaches.

Led by the BMU leaders in Uyawi chair Isaiah Ngesa, Lucky Odhiambo, Francis Omondi, demanded the road be graveled or tarmacked. “Roads leading to the fish landing beaches here are important because they help in transportation of our produce to the local and outlying markets,’’ said Odhiambo
They were joined by the boda boda riders, who also demanded rehabilitation of the impassable roads in Bondo connecting the Lake to the hinterland.

The riders asked area MP Gideon Ochanda  to fastrack the repair the road that links fish landing beaches.
During the protest, motorcyclists barricaded the road with logs in solidarity with the BMU officials over the bad state of the Bondo-Uyawi beach road.

But Ochanda said the responsibility to repair the road that connects the fish landing sites is under the Kenya Rural Roads Authority. (KERRA). He called on the residents to stop apportioning blame to his office saying he had asked KERRA to take responsibility to repair the dilapidated road.
