Residents of Maili Saba area in Kwanza Sub county are demanding the removal of a police station in the area saying the officers led by the officer commanding station ( OCS) were harassing them and demanding bribes. The residents accused the officers of invading homes and harassing them for not putting on face masks. They cited a recent incident at a home situated two kilometers away from Maili Saba trading centre where the area OCS Micah Ewoi led his officers who were not in uniform to storm homes to arrest those without masks, prompting residents to raise the alarm forcing the officers to go back to their station. The residents wondered why the OCS was busy extorting money from them for not putting on masks even when having meals, yet the ministry of health had not put such a rule in force. “My five-year -old son was arrested by the officers for not putting on a face mask and the OCS demanded that I pay Sh5,000 to have him released from custody. How come that I have to pay an officer a bribe of Sh5,000 to have a small child released? We are tired of this exploitation. We want CS Fred Matiang’i to take these officers away to give us peace,” said Maria Lokiru, a resident. |
