Reprieve for families affected by floods as Govt pledges help
The government has promised to assist tens of families which have been displaced by the ongoing rains in various parts of the country.
This came as the State issued a warning to families in flood-prone areas of West Pokot, Nyatike, Bundalange, Tana River and parts of Siaya to move to higher grounds with more rains expected.
According to Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna who was speaking in Nakuru on Thursday, May 13 the rains which had been projected by the meteorological department had left a trail of destruction.
He was however quick to note that the State was keen to support those affected while at the same time calling on the families in the flood-prone areas to relocate to higher grounds.
“We have embarked on the process of mapping the areas affected by the rains and identifying the projects damaged by the floods,” Oguna said.
This emerged when Oguna and senior government officers moved in to inspect works on a Moi South Lake road in Naivasha which has also been affected by the floods.
He termed the road as very critical to the economy of the country as it led to tens of flower farms, hotels, geothermal wells and various tourist destinations.
“This is a critical road that has been under rehabilitation by the government at a cost of over Sh390m and we are happy with the works done,” he said.
Oguna, who was flanked by several government officers, said that the government was keen to invest on capital infrastructure projects in various parts of the country.
“One of the main incentives for investors is transport and the government is currently undertaking rehabilitation of several roads across the country,” he said.
This was echoed by Nakuru County Commissioner Erastus Mbui who noted that Naivasha had benefited from several capital projects.
He identified the Industrial park in Mai Mahiu, the ongoing works on Kinamba-Njabini road and the Longonot meter-gauge railway line as some of the key projects around the lakeside town.
“The government has invested heavily in Naivasha which is now turning out to be a hub of business and tourism activities,” he said.
On his part, Engineer Johannes Obwocha from KERRA said that they were seeking lasting solutions on flooding along the busy Moi South Lake road.
“Currently we have done over 19km of this road and the remaining section will be completed in a matter of weeks,” he said.
