Refugee student who defied all odds

A 17-year-old South Sudan refugee from Uasin County was all smiles after she scored an ‘A’ plain of 82 points in the just-released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
Adhel Garang (right), a former student at Bunyore Girls in Vihiga County attributes her superb performance to hard work and support from her teachers and classmates.
Garang, who lives in Kapsoya estate with her mother, said that thirst for education forced her family to relocate her from Kakuma refugee camp to Eldoret.
“We settled briefly at Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana County after fleeing deadly conflict in South Sudan before we moved to Eldoret where we call home,” Garang revealed.
She described how they lived in a congested two-bedroomed house where she found it hard to revise for both her primary and secondary school national examinations.
Garang said that it was a great joy for her and the entire family when she received an admission letter to join Bunyore Girls which is one of the leading national schools in the country.
“I want to pursue medicine at one of the public universities in the country and later specialise in the provision of medical care for the sick
children,” she added, saying she has a passion for the children’s welfare having come from a country where children are the most vulnerable during the deadly civil war conflicts.
