Reach out to rivals, women leaders urge President

The Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) leadership has called for dialogue between President William Ruto and Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga.

MYWO chairperson Rehab Mwikali Muiu made the appeal during a meeting with women from the North Rift on yesterday in Kitale town, Trans Nzoia county.

Muiu (pictured) implored the President to initiate the dialogue to avoid collapse of the economy.

She said ongoing opposition demonstrations were disrupting daily economic activities and hindering efforts towards building a united nation.

She also expressed concern that the new distribution system for the Women Enterprise Fund, increased from Sh4.5 billion to Sh13 billion, was not favourable to women and called on Ruto to increase the amount accessible through the Hustler Fund kitty to help women scale up their businesses.

Former Nominated Senator Zipporah Kittony, who is also a former MYWO chairperson, emphasised the need for leaders to unite for the betterment of the nation.

MYWO leaders from Uasin Gishu, West Pokot, Nandi and Trans Nzoia counties were in attendance.

Kittony raised concern about the polarisation of the country. She lamented that the growing divisions had robbed the country of opportunity to focus on development.  “Your Excellency, for the last six months since you took over, the country has been so polarized. I don’t know when we will get time to think of development and plan for the betterment of this country.”

Jane Wekesa, the chair of Trans Nzoia county’s MYWO, also urged the President to engage in dialogue with Raila.
