Raila shares heartfelt tribute after death of former MP Lempurkel

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has issued a heartfelt message of condolence following the death of former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel.

In a statement shared on his social media pages shortly after the news broke on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Raila expressed deep sorrow at the loss of the former legislator.

He described Lempurkel as a committed leader who dedicated his life to defending the rights of the Maa community and championing justice across the country.

Raila highlighted Lempurkel’s longstanding association with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), noting his active role in strengthening the party and advancing its vision. He praised the late MP’s dedication to his constituents, portraying him as a relentless advocate for social and political transformation.

“Hon. Lempukel was a tireless advocate for the rights of his people, a fierce and spirited defender of justice, and a stalwart of the ODM party. His unwavering commitment to his constituents and his passion for social and political change made a significant impact on the lives of many.” Raila stated.

Friendship ties

The ODM leader also reflected on his personal relationship with Lempurkel, describing him as both a trusted colleague and a close friend. He emphasised that Lempurkel’s contributions to the Maa community and his influence on Kenya’s political landscape will continue to be remembered for generations.

“He was not only a colleague but also a dear friend, whose work and influence will be remembered for years to come. His contributions to the upliftment of the Maa community and his role in shaping the political landscape of our nation will forever be etched in history.” He added.

His demise

The late MP died on Sunday, August 24, 2025, while in the intensive care unit, where he had been hospitalised for one week following a tragic accident on Rongai.

The ODM party has also come out to mourn the MP.
