Raila is a symbol of decades-long struggle for Kenya’s freedom – Matiang’i

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has paid an emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a statesman and patriot whose life defined Kenya’s long and painful journey to democracy.

In a heartfelt message shared on X posted on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Matiang’i said Raila’s passing marks the loss of a national icon who dedicated his life to the fight for freedom, justice, and dignity for all Kenyans.

“It is with profound sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya, a statesman, a patriot and an enduring icon of our nation’s second liberation,” he said.

Matiang’i reflected on Raila’s lifelong commitment to the country, saying his courage and resilience shaped Kenya’s conscience and inspired generations to believe in democracy.

“Through decades of struggle and public service, he stood unbowed in his conviction that freedom, democracy, and justice must be the pillars of our Republic,” he said, adding that Raila’s vision helped shape the conscience of our nation and inspired generations to believe in the promise of a fair and democratic Kenya.

The former CS said Raila’s political and personal sacrifices were unmatched, calling his contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.

“I join the nation in mourning this devastating loss. Raila’s role and contribution to our country’s democratic journey are not only indelible but truly and practically unparalleled,” Matiang’i said.

He extended his condolences to the Odinga family and to all Kenyans mourning the former Prime Minister, noting that Raila’s death has left the nation grappling with deep sorrow.

“My deepest condolences go to Mama Ida, the Odinga family, the people of Nyanza, and the entire nation. It is difficult to say more than this, as I, like many, struggle to come to terms with this heartbreaking loss,” he stated.

Matiang’i described Raila as a living testament to courage, sacrifice, and an unyielding belief in the sovereignty and dignity of the Kenyan people, adding that his legacy will forever remain woven into the story of Kenya’s freedom and democracy.
