Raila calls for investigations into accident that killed Lempurkel

ODM Party leader Raila Odinga has called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel.

Speaking during the burial of the former legislator in Laikipia, on Friday, September 5, 2025, Raila stated that the circumstances surrounding Lempurkel’s death did not add up.

“The person responsible for the accident that killed Lempurkel must be arrested so that proper investigations are conducted on the circumstances of the accident,” Raila said.

Rongai accident

“We were told that it was an accident, where the former MP was knocked down by a vehicle by unknown people.”

Lempurkel served in the 11th parliament between 2013 and 2017 as an ODM MP.

He died while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he had been admitted after being involved in a road accident in Ongata-Rongai, along Magadi Road.

Lempurkel sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries.

Maa rights advocate

His death was announced by his family, and he was mourned by community leaders and former colleagues, who remembered him as a dedicated and selfless public servant.

Raila hailed Lempurkel as a tireless advocate for the rights of the Maa people, noting that the region had lost a towering icon.

He equally highlighted Lempurkel’s longstanding association with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), noting his active role in strengthening the party and advancing its vision. He praised the late MP’s dedication to his constituents, portraying him as a relentless advocate for social and political transformation.

“Hon. Lempukel was a tireless advocate for the rights of his people, a fierce and spirited defender of justice, and a stalwart of the ODM party. His unwavering commitment to his constituents and his passion for social and political change made a significant impact on the lives of many.” Raila stated.

“He was not only a colleague but also a dear friend, whose work and influence will be remembered for years to come. His contributions to the upliftment of the Maa community and his role in shaping the political landscape of our nation will forever be etched in history.” He added.
