Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a rap artiste based in Nairobi, who besides music works as a financial consultant. I also believe I am the biggest artiste Kenya will ever have. My name, Dom, is symbolic of what I stand for: Definition of Music.
Why is it important for an artiste to look the part in music videos or performances?
Dressing up for a performance not only influences the impressions that the audience have of you, but also impacts on your own confidence and self-empowerment on stage.
For me, dressing the part is a part of the package that comes with being an artiste. The art has to match up and be in proper coordination.
What look do you aim for every time you have a video shoot or performance?
The look depends with the concept of the video and the content in the song. Whichever the look I go for, I aim to appear unique. I consider myself stylish, so I would definitely go for pieces that would match my sense of fashion.
What kind of events do you find hardest to dress up for?
None so far; in fact, its a walk in the park for me when it comes to dress up for events. My closet has more than enough options and that usually makes me spoilt for choice. So, I never have an issue dressing up for any event at all.
Have you ever experienced a wardrobe malfunction?
Fortunately no. And I pray I don’t. But I always carry with me a safety knit kit, so whatever happens I am armed with a solution or back up.
Take us through your grooming routine?
I have two different routines. The first one is my everyday routine when going to work: I shower, dress up and do my make-up proper. The second one is when I have a performance. I shower, prep my face; that is whole face regime, which involves scrubbing, cleaning and toning. Then I have a snack then get a face beat from my make-up artist then dress up the part.
What would you do if money wasn’t an object?
I would have the craziest music videos and festivals Kenya has ever seen. I wouldn’t mind channelling most of my money there. I look at it as an investment and so my wardrobe would be part of that too.
Who is your favourite designer?
I live for Olivier Rousteing and Alexander McQueen. They have unique and stylish pieces. Designer pieces are a bit expensive, but its those pieces that you cherish and glad to have in your closet that truly define the saying ‘quality over quantity’.
Which celebrity do you think needs a wardrobe fix?
Kenyan artiste Pryshon Africa. She covers up too much. She needs to explore a bit more when it comes to stylish pieces and looks.
Who would you trade characters with for their fashion looks?
Digital influencer Nyane Lebajoa. I love her fashion sense and how daring and edgy her style is. She likes to rock bold hair colours, a look I really love. In fact, I wouldn’t pass an opportunity to raid her closet.
What is your best fashion buy this year?
I just bought some crazy hair. I say crazy because its one of those bold units in my wig and weave selection; something different from my usual. Can’t wait to wear it and show it off… Ha-ha-ha.
What can’t you leave the house without?
Many things, but my bag is one of those things. Usually, I carry everything I need in it; from lip balm, to the phone, hand oil and wet wipes. So, if I happened to leave it behind I would have left all the things I would need for the rest of the duration I would be out.
What do you splurge on the most?
I spend a lot of money on my music; studio sessions, videos, make-up artists and clothes. Because music is my office and business.
