Protesters on Thursday, March 16 stormed the Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o’s office over the demolition of part of Nyamlori Business Centre.

The group stormed the city hall which hosts county offices, accusing the city manager of flattening a section of their market.

The traders claim that the city manager ignored a court order that stopped their planned relocation to the new Uhuru Business Complex citing lack of consultation in the process.

Staff lock themselves inside offices

County members of staff were forced to flee for their safety with some locking themselves inside offices.

Bernard Onyango, Nyamlori Business Centre Chairperson, said they stormed the county offices because some county officials demolished a toilet at the business centre during the wee hours of the night without giving them any substantial reason despite the matter pending in court.

“There were plans to force us out of the market but we challenged it in court and it is wrong for county officials to invade the market,” he said.

He also noted that what happened was not in order because hundreds of traders depend on the market to make a living.
