President William Ruto has revealed the move he has taken to save Moi University and other struggling higher learning institutions from collapse.

Speaking at parliament on Thursday, November 21, 2024, during the State of the Nation Address, the Head of State said that the challenges facing Moi University are related to internal administrative and governance issues.

Ruto’s firm instructions

To second public university in the country to its former glory, President Ruto stated that he has given firm instructions that the issues should be addressed.

President Ruto further stated that he had recognized the financial challenges faced by universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

As a result, Ruto stated that he had introduced a new student-centered education funding model as part of the plan to address the financial challenges.

According to the first in command, the new university funding model gives priority to the most vulnerable students, offering them up to 95 percent of government support, while pulling the universities back from the brink of collapsing.

“Recognizing the financial challenges faced by our universities and TVETs, we introduced a new student-centered higher education funding model. This model gives priority to the most vulnerable students, offering them up to 95 percent of government support while also pulling the universities back from the brink of collapsing. The remaining challenges for a few universities like Moi University are related to internal administrative and governance issues which I have given firm instructions that they should be addressed,” President Ruto stated.

Moi University VC grilled

Ruto’s remarks on challenges facing Moi University, which he says are related to internal administrative and governance issues, comes just a day after the varsity’s VC Professor Isaac Kosgey was subjected to a day-long interview and statement recording at the EACC offices in Eldoret.

The anti-graft body says that following increasing media inquiries and the public interest arising from the allegations of financial mismanagement in Moi University, it has seized the matter and investigations are ongoing.

EACC says it commenced investigations in June 2024 upon receipt of a report that some Senior Management Officials at Moi University had in collusion with private consultants hatched a scheme that could have led to loss of funds.
