Pre-Season results worry Ingwe fans ahead of kick-off
The 2019/2020 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) is yet to begin but there are already jitters at 12-time champions AFC Leopards camp following a spate of poor returns in pre-season friendly matches.
Leopards have been caged by Yanga of Tanzania, newly promoted league side Wazito, Mathare United and KCB in their pre-season friendly matches, sparking uproar from a depressed fan base that is yet to celebrate the league title since 1998.
With little prospects of ending the 21-year wait for the prize, a section of fans are already calling for coach Andre Casa Mbungo’s head with the season yet to begin.
The Rwandan tactician hauled Ingwe from relegation embers last season to a comfortable mid table finish. He was also given a free hand to make his signings. But rather than display evidence of progress, the big cat is showing early signs of decline.
Ingwe made eye-catching signings to bolster the team with the biggest name being of the eight new signings by Casa Mbungo, teenage defender Collins Shichenje has been the standout player despite his humble background. He is touted as their best signing and may be in the starting team when Ingwe take to the pitch on Sunday against Kakamega Homeboyz.
Another signing worth noting at the Den is forward Hansel Ochieng, roped in from Nzoia Sugar to help add the club’s waning goal count. Foreign imports Vincent Habamahoro, Tresor Ndikumana and Ismail Diara have everything to prove for title- thirsty Ingwe.
“We have to win the title in two seasons. This season may be too soon to promise but it does not mean we are not going to fight for it. Our place is up there with Gor Mahia on the continental scene and whatever it takes we must win to get to the top,” Dan Shikanda, whose election as club chairman is still under adjudication, told People Daily.
Mbungo is working silently, and, perhaps, will talk when desired results trickling in.
