Pope Francis has prayed for Kenya amid a raging flood crisis that has been ongoing for weeks, claiming lives and destroying property.
According to a statement from the Vatican, Pope Francis on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, asked for prayers for the many people who are suffering the effects of flooding in East Africa.
“I wish to convey to the people of Kenya my spiritual closeness at this time when a severe flood has tragically taken the lives of many of our brothers and sisters, injuring others and causing widespread destruction.
“I invite you to pray for all those who are suffering the effects of this natural disaster. Even in the midst of adversity, let us remember the joy of the risen Christ,” the Pope said during the general audience.
The recent crisis that saw many deaths is the one that was witnessed in Mai Mahiu on Sunday night, where over 40 people lost their lives.
President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika visited and consoled the Mai Mahiu victims.
State’s response
The government has taken several measures to ensure minimal risk to lives as the rain continues to pound several parts of the country.
It has also involved a national multi-agency emergency response committee that will coordinate emergency response efforts from the National Disaster Operations Centre at Nyayo House.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are also involved in recovery and evacuation exercises.
According to the government’s spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, the distribution of food and non-food items has continued across the country, with a relief operation planned for the next two months.
“The government has also set up a Relief Operations Centre at the National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB). Senior government officials are leading government response efforts in the counties. The First Lady Rachel Ruto will be in Kibra today to lead a relief distribution to affected families,” Mwauura said in a statement.
In the last 24 hours, the loss of 10 lives has been reported, and this has raised the national flood-related death toll to 179, including 164 adults and 15 children, according to Mwaura.
20 more people have been reported as missing, putting the national tally of those reported as missing at 90, as 125 Kenyans have been injured and are receiving treatment in health facilities across the country, the government said.
