Politicians on the spot for ignoring Corona rules during public rallies
The behaviour of key politicians who have been holding public gatherings, is being blamed for the violation of Covid 19 containment measures.
Open disregard of Covid-19 restrictions by political leaders comes at a time when most Kenyans have shown signs fatigue in adhering to the measures.
Kenyans who spoke to the People Daily, said they are confused as to whether to continue adhering to the measures, yet politicians are going on with their usual business without adhering to the rules.
They cited various gathering organised by leaders including Deputy President William Ruto, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as case points where the guidelines have been breached.
“You have seen what this politicians are doing, they have been going round campaigning and meeting people, where does that leave me as a common person. For now, I don’t care about Corona,” said Michael Kaheda; a tuk tuk operator.
Notch higher
Last weekend, the politicians took the violation of the measures a notch higher as they held huge gatherings.
From hosting mega entertainment concerts to political rallies, the mood of the country is clear that further restrictions will not hold.
In Mombasa, residents were on Sunday treated to a taste of entertainment and socializing, something they had been starved of since the pandemic struck the country six months ago.
Revellers thronged the newly refurbished Mama Ngina waterfront in their thousands for the World tourism day celebration.
Strictly monitored
The sea of humanity that flocked the water front was perhaps a demonstration of how Kenyans had missed the party life.
Various top artistes including Kaligraph Jones, Tanasha Dona, King Kaka, Masauti, Adassa, Susumila, among others, performed at the event that was led by Governor Joho, his deputy William Kingi among other leaders.
Although there was mandatory temperature screening at the entrance where wearing of face masks and hand washing was strictly monitored by Mombasa county government inspectorate officers, this level of caution was thrown in the wind once the revelers gained entrance.
Social distancing was forgotten and nobody bothered to put on a facemask.
Elsewhere, in Bungoma, it was an almost similar situation as Ruto led thousands in a political rally at Bumula constituency.
Hundreds of supporters, majority of whom had no face masks on, flocked around his car, as he addressed the multitude.
Other leaders including ODM leader Raila Odinga and even President Uhuru Kenyatta have also violated the measures.
