Police warn Mombasa drivers as heavy traffic hits Nyali Bridge area

By , April 18, 2026

Police have warned Mombasa drivers to expect long delays after a heavy traffic snarl-up hit the city on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

The National Police Service said the worst queues formed along Saba Saba, Buxton, and Nyali Bridge. Officers blamed the chaos on ongoing construction work. Workers now build pillars between Nyali Bridge and Kengeleni.

This project will continue for several weeks and has narrowed the road in that section. The National Police Service deployed extra officers to the area straight away. These officers now direct traffic and watch for rule breakers.

Police made it clear they will take stern action against anyone who violates traffic rules. A police statement said:

“The NPS is working with relevant agencies to restore normal traffic flow.”

Alternative routes

Police also advised drivers to look for alternative routes to ease congestion and improve safety for everyone on the road. One diversion now operates along the Kisauni–Malindi–Mombasa Road.

Police direct vehicles towards Mishomoroni, where drivers exit at the Kisauni junction. This route helps some traffic avoid the worst part of the snarl-up.

The snarl-up has already caused major delays for commuters and people travelling between the island and the mainland. Police reminded the public of their message in clear terms.

“We urge motorists to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline, to consider alternative routes to ease congestion, and to enhance safety,” the statement added.

The National Police Service also reaffirmed its position.

“The NPS reaffirms its steadfast commitment to maintaining law and order on our roads,” officers said.

Construction crews continue to work on the pillars, and police expect the disruption to last for several more weeks. Drivers who need to travel through Mombasa should plan their journeys earlier than normal and check for updates before they set off. Police officers remain on the ground to manage the situation.
