Police have arrested a 25-year-old man after being found with a large haul of cannabis in Bungoma County.

Officers from Kiminini Police Station arrested the person in the Duka Moja area of Tongaren Sub-County.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement posted by the National Police Service (NPS) on its official X account on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

“Police officers from Kiminini Police Station earlier today arrested a 25-year-old suspect in the Duka Moja area, in Tongaren Sub-County, Bungoma County,” the statement read.

“The man was in possession of cannabis sativa weighing approximately 243 kilograms, one of the largest seizures reported in recent weeks.

“The suspect was found in possession of a substantial consignment of suspected cannabis sativa, weighing approximately 243 kg,” the police added.

The man is currently being held at a police station and is expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue. The NPS said it remains committed to fighting drug abuse and trafficking across the country.

Nationwide drug crackdown

This latest incident follows a string of drug-related arrests reported in various counties over the past few weeks. On August 1, officers in Murang’a County arrested a suspected drug peddler and recovered 63 rolls of bhang hidden inside his jacket. Days later, another suspect was arrested at a police roadblock in Wajir County with 3 kilograms of cannabis stashed in a safari bag.

Earlier in July, police in Narok East seized 600 brooms of bhang after chasing down a vehicle suspected of ferrying the drugs from Kisii to Nairobi. Several other arrests have been made in Kakamega and Nairobi, underlining the scale of the narcotics problem in Kenya.

The police, working closely with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), continue to encourage the public to report suspicious activity through tip lines or the nearest police station.

The recent surge in arrests shows a heightened focus on drug trafficking, with authorities promising no let-up in efforts to stop the flow of illegal substances into Kenyan communities.
