Police recover more illegal firearms in Samburu, bringing total to 8

The National Government’s directive on the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms continues to gain momentum in Samburu Central Sub-County, with officers recovering one firearm adding to 8 prevously recovered.

In a statement by the National Police Service on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the officers recovered an illegally held AK-47 rifle.

The rifle was voluntarily surrendered on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, by a resident of Loosuk Location, along with one magazine and three rounds of ammunition.

At the same time, the officers confirmed that the firearm and ammunition are secured in the Maralal Police Station armoury, pending further action.

“Yesterday, 15th April 2026, a resident of Loosuk Location voluntarily surrendered an illegally held AK-47 rifle, along with one magazine and three rounds of ammunition, to police officers at Maralal Police Station. The firearm and ammunition are now secured in the station armoury, pending further action,” NPS noted

According to the officers, this latest surrender brings the total number of weapons recovered in the area during the ongoing exercise to eight (8), together with 31 rounds of ammunition.

The National Police Service commends those who have chosen to disarm voluntarily, noting that this cooperation is vital to ensuring the security and safety of all residents in areas affected by insecurity.

“The disarmament exercise remains ongoing. Members of the public who hold unlicensed firearms are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the current amnesty period and surrender them to the nearest administrative or police office, without fear of prosecution,” NPS stated.

Turkana operation

The National Police Service have recovered two illegal firearms following an operation in Isiolo North Sub-County.

In a statement on the official NPS X account on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Officers announced that the rifles were voluntarily surrendered on Monday, April 13, 2026.

According to the officers, two residents from the Lowangila area surrendered an AK-47 and a G3 rifle to the National Police Service in Isiolo North Sub-County.

“Members of the public continue to respond positively to the ongoing ‘Operation Dumisha Usalama”. Yesterday, 13th April 2026, two residents of the Lowangila area voluntarily surrendered an AK-47 and a G3 rifle to the National Police Service in Isiolo North Sub-County,” NPS stated.

The Officers confirmed that the surrendered firearms, magazines, and ammunition have been securely kept in the station armoury pending further police action.

At the same time, the National Police Service has commended members of the public for their continued cooperation in this security operation while urging members of the public still in possession of illegal items to surrender them.

“We urge anyone still in possession of illegal weapons to take advantage of the current amnesty period and surrender them to the nearest police station,” NPS added.

NPS has maintained that the Operation Dumisha Usalama remains active as the officers work together with the public to eliminate illegal firearms in the region.
