Police officers in Kiambu County have arrested one person of interest and recovered a large haul of narcotics and illicit alcohol during a coordinated anti-drug operation that uncovered cannabis and chang’aa concealed inside a poultry house.

The operation was carried out by officers from Kibichoi Police Station working jointly with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) at Thuita Shopping Centre as part of an ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking and the manufacture of illicit brews.

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement issued on Saturday, July 18, 2026, said officers arrested the person of interest during the operation before conducting a search that led to the recovery of 200 rolls of bhang.

Following the arrest, the individual was escorted to his residence for further searches, where police made additional discoveries.

Chang’aa hidden in poultry house

Police said a search of the compound led officers to a poultry house where they recovered 120 litres of chang’aa concealed in six 20-litre jerricans.

The discovery prompted officers to extend the search to a nearby store within the compound.

Inside the store, officers recovered 3.4 kilograms of suspected cannabis together with assorted items believed to have been used in the preparation, packaging and distribution of illegal narcotics.

All the recovered exhibits were seized and secured as investigations continue.

The National Police Service confirmed that the person of interest has been placed in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.

Investigators are expected to establish whether the recovered drugs and illicit alcohol were intended for local distribution or formed part of a wider trafficking network operating within Kiambu County.

Crackdown on drugs and illicit brews

The latest operation comes as security agencies continue intensifying the fight against the manufacture, sale and distribution of narcotics and illicit alcoholic drinks across the country.

Authorities have in recent months conducted numerous operations targeting suspected drug dens, chang’aa brewing sites and cannabis farms in several counties, warning that the illegal trade continues to fuel crime, addiction and public health challenges.

The government has maintained that multi-agency operations involving the National Police Service, National Government Administration Officers and other security agencies will continue as part of efforts to dismantle criminal networks dealing in drugs and illicit alcohol.

Police have urged members of the public to continue reporting suspected drug trafficking, illegal brewing and other criminal activities through the nearest police station or other official reporting channels, saying community cooperation remains critical in combating the vice.
