Police recover 12 firearms in West Pokot crackdown

Police from Marich Police Station in West Pokot County have recovered at least twelve illegal firearms voluntarily surrendered by residents of Pokot Central Sub-County.

In a post by the National Police Service on X on Monday March 9, 2026, the officers confirmed that the firearms were handed over with the support of the National Government Administration Officers and community leadership.

“Residents of Pokot Central Sub-County in West Pokot County have voluntarily surrendered twelve illegal firearms at Marich Police Station,” NPS said.

Police have also confirmed that the firearms, comprised of twelve AK-47 rifles, twelve magazines, and twenty-four rounds of ammunition, are secured in safe custody pending further administrative action.

“This voluntary surrender marks a significant step in the ongoing government-led disarmament initiative aimed at enhancing peace, stability, and security in the region through community cooperation,” NPS added.

The National Police Service further applauded members of the public and local leaders for their collaboration in supporting efforts to rid communities of illegal firearms.

Police further called on Individuals who still possess illegal firearms to take advantage of the ongoing disarmament efforts and surrender them to the nearest police station.

“The public is also urged to continue partnering with the police by sharing information on suspicious activities,” NPS said.

Turkana crackdown

The West Pokot crackdown comes a day after Police in Turkana County also recovered illegal firearms as the security agencies step up the crusade against crime and also curb the proliferation of illicit weapons in the area.

Taking it to their social media handles on Monday, March 9, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that the firearms were voluntarily surrendered on Sunday, March 8, 2026, as part of the continuing security crackdown.

Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a multi-agency operation to bring peace to the county and improve security in the neighbouring areas that have, in the past, has been plagued by banditry and armed crimes.

“Operation Maliza Uhalifu continues to record progress in enhancing security within Turkana County through coordinated multi-agency efforts.

“The operation brings together key security stakeholders who continue to work collaboratively to combat crime and curb the proliferation of illegal firearms. Yesterday, two more firearms were surrendered, demonstrating growing cooperation between security agencies and the communities in the region,” NPS stated.
