Police recover 10 stolen camels in Turkana

Police in Turkana County have recovered ten camels that armed bandits had stolen while the animals were grazing in the Kataruk area of Loima Sub-County.

According to a statement released by the National Police Service on Saturday, November 8, 2025, a joint security team comprising officers from Lokichar and Lorugum Police Stations, working closely with local community members, pursued the suspects towards the Kalodicha and Kangisaja areas, where the mission bore fruit.

”The coordinated response led to the recovery of all the stolen camels and the arrest of one suspect, while two others escaped. Efforts to trace and arrest the remaining suspects are ongoing,” the statement said in part.

The NPS has further revealed that the recovered animals have been positively identified and returned to their rightful owner, adding that the apprehended person of interest remains in police custody, pending processing and court arraignment.

The Service has commended the community for their cooperation and continued partnership in the fight against livestock theft and banditry in the North Rift region.

Meanwhile, the development unfolded a week after police in Laikipia County recovered stolen livestock following a violent attack by armed bandits. The National Police Service (NPS) detailed the operation in a statement on Saturday, November 1, 2025, highlighting the swift and coordinated response that led to the recovery.

“Yesterday, 31st October 2025, police in Laikipia successfully recovered stolen livestock during a coordinated security operation,” read the NPS statement in part.

According to the National Police Service statement, the recovery followed a report from a resident in Matwiku Sub-Location, whose son was ambushed while herding livestock in the Mlima Jangili area around 11:00 am.

Armed bandits made off with 30 sheep and goats and seven cows. The alert prompted an immediate response from law enforcement agencies, which initiated a multi-agency operation to track the stolen animals and apprehend the culprits.

“The recovery came after a report by a resident of Matwiku Sub-Location, who stated that at around 1100 hours, his son was attacked by armed bandits while herding livestock in the Mlima Jangili area. The assailants made off with 30 sheep and goats and 7 cows,” the statement added.

Members of the public are encouraged to continue sharing information to support security efforts.
