Police raid Al-Shabab hideout, recover 5 AK-47s & 600 rounds of ammunition
Police officers from the National Police Service have raided an area believed to be an Al-Shabab hideout, recovering at least five AK-47 assault rifles and twenty magazines loaded with a total of 600 rounds of ammunition in Nairobi.
In a statement by the National Police Service on Friday, February 20, 2026, the officers announced that a data analysis linked the key persons of interest to the Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabaab.
Likewise, the officers noted that the security agencies prevented what could have been a devastating attack.
“Officers from the National Police Service, in collaboration with other security agencies, conducted a high-level counter-terrorism operation that prevented what could have been a devastating attack,” NPS said.
The officers confirmed that the intervention followed months of coordinated intelligence gathering, surveillance, and data analysis focused on persons believed to be linked to the Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabaab.
“Acting on verified intelligence, the officers raided a hideout in Nairobi used by the suspects, where they seized five AK-47 assault rifles and twenty magazines loaded with a total of 600 rounds of ammunition, six hand grenades, and a Makarov pistol with 24 rounds of ammunition,” NPS confirmed.
Additionally, medical kits and logistical supplies were also recovered at the scene, underscoring the scale of the threat that was disrupted.

According to the National Police Service, the operation reflects sustained inter-agency intelligence coordination and proactive security measures designed to disrupt extremist networks, neutralise imminent threats, and reinforce national security while safeguarding lives and property.
Also adding that it brings forward the intensive, often unseen efforts by intelligence and security agencies working around the clock to detect, disrupt, and dismantle such plots before they are executed.

According to the officers, the National Police Service, through specialised units such as the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit and the Special Operations Group, alongside other security formations, continues to maintain heightened vigilance across the city as well as throughout the country.
The National Police Service has further affirmed that it is still monitoring potential threats and responding swiftly to safeguard the public, critical infrastructure, and public spaces.
In addition, the Service has said it remains committed to combating all forms of criminality and reaffirms its dedication to the safety and security of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors.
