Police poke holes in Koimburi’s abduction as probe deepens

Police have poked holes in the reported abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi, stating that the location where the legislator claimed he was abandoned does not match the scene shown in an amateur video.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja announced that the case is under investigation to uncover the truth surrounding the alleged abduction, revealing that they had discovered some discrepancies and inconsistencies.
“Upon comparing the vegetation and road dimensions at the scene with those in the video, it was established that the two did not match,” IG Kanja said.
The police boss further reported that during questioning, a witness named Moses Kariuki, who is the caretaker of a coffee farm owned by Jimi Wanjigi, stated that he did not witness the incident as claimed by the victim’s family and colleagues.
Kanja also said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited Plainview Hospital in Ruiru, where the MP had been taken for treatment.
Police also revealed that the vehicle used to transport him, with the registration number KCJ 660P, belonged to George Koimburi and was driven by Farida Njeri, who was also the first responder at the alleged crime scene, raising questions about the credibility of the testimony.
“The hospital did not disclose the nature of the treatment or first aid administered, making it difficult to assess the extent of the alleged injuries,” Kanja added.
Detectives were turned away from the hospital as they sought to establish how he was faring and also interrogate the doctors handling him when they were told they could not do that at that time by the MP’s family members.
Officials said the team revisited the scene where the MP was found on Monday, May 26, 2025, hours after he had said he was kidnapped while leaving a church event on Sunday.
Kanja has denied reports that Police were involved in the abduction and torture, insinuating that it could have been staged or conducted by other agencies.
He, however, said the MP has been under investigation for a land fraud matter, and a consent to prosecute was issued by the Office of the Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
‘Badly beaten’
“On Friday, May 23, 2025, the MP having been fully aware of police intentions to arrest, evaded some dragnet and duped police by escaping using a motorcycle alongside his private security and switched off his mobile phone,” Kanja said, adding that the MP’s car only had the driver who was arrested before later being released after recording a statement.
A special team from DCI headquarters is already working on the purported abduction video and all the circumstances surrounding their allegations to get to the bottom of the matter.
The team wants to establish who picked him from the scene and how he or she knew he was there.
“We urge anyone with information regarding the incident shown in the amateur video to report to their nearest police station or contact us via our toll-free numbers…”
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on May 25, 2025, claimed that Koimburi was tortured by his captors before they dumped him. Koimburi was allegedly abducted outside a church in Mugutha, Kiambu County, on Sunday.
He was later found at a coffee plantation in Kiambu on Monday.
Addressing a press conference in Nairobi after visiting the legislator in the hospital, Gachagua claimed the MP was found with soft-tissue injuries from being “badly beaten”.
“It is not known where he was taken to, but after a serious search, he was found in a coffee plantation badly beaten. He was taken to the hospital, and doctors have confirmed that Koimburi was tortured by professionals. He has serious soft tissue injuries,” the former DP said.
He added that the MP lost his voice from the incident due to a dangerous chemical the captors allegedly made him inhale.
“He has lost his voice and some chemical was administered through inhalation; doctors say that chemical has interfered with his vocal cords,” claimed Gachagua.
According to the former DP, doctors took tissue samples to different laboratories and are doing everything within their power to ensure he is out of danger.
Gachagua, who was impeached last October after falling out with President William Ruto, blamed the reported abduction on “undercover agents” he claims are working for the government to silence opposition politicians.
“We have confirmation that the government has put up a squad to deal with leaders who are against this regime,” he told the press. Video footage of Sunday’s incident showed Koimburi being driven away in a silver Subaru Forester bearing civilian registration plates after he was captured. His wife, Ann Koimburi, was also injured during the scuffle.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) denied involvement in the abduction but confirmed that Koimburi has been sought since Friday in connection with alleged land fraud and misuse of Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
The wife said authorities previously took her husband’s phone and vehicle during investigations, but failed to provide clarity on his whereabouts.
