Police issue terror alert in Kakamega

Police in Kakamega on Friday issued a terror alert in the area urging residents and visitors to watch out.

In a media briefing, deputy regional police commandant-western Leonard Omollo claimed an imminent terror attack in Kakamega and its environs prompted authorities to cancel two rallies planned in Mumias on Saturday.

He claimed the terror threat forced the police to allow only the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) meeting at Bukhungu Stadium as managing two rallies would outstretch the security officers.

He told reporters in his office that police acting on intelligence resolved to outlaw the Nabongo grounds leaders meeting and the Mumias sports complex cane farmers meeting.

Asked by reporters what were the prime targets for the alleged terror attacks, Omollo said that information was classified but insisted the police department was current facing serious challenged, which the two rallies would exacerbate

“As you can see I have all the security chiefs in the region here for a security briefing…those of you who defy this order shall face the consequences,” was his response on whether access to the Mumias venues would be secured by police.

“We can still manage the two rallies but that decision to keep off Mumias has been communicated to the conveners, MP Benjamin Washiali, and former cabinet secretary Rashid Mohammed and former senator Dr. Boni Khalwale,” he justified.
