Police intercept Kampala–Nairobi bus, seize bales of cannabis in Vihiga
By Kenneth Mwenda, October 27, 2025Police officers have intercepted a passenger bus ferrying narcotics along the Busia–Kisumu Road at Yala Bridge in Vihiga County.
According to a statement shared by the National Police Service (NPS) on Monday, October 27, 2025, the officers were on patrol when they stopped a bus plying the Kampala–Nairobi route. Upon conducting a search, they recovered two bales of a green substance suspected to be cannabis sativa.
The narcotics, which had been tightly sealed with yellow cellotape, were traced to two passengers on board. Police identified and arrested them at the scene. They are currently in custody as they await processing and arraignment in court. The seized exhibits have been secured at the station.
“Upon conducting a thorough search, the officers recovered two bales of a green substance suspected to be cannabis sativa, which had been sealed with yellow cellotape,” the statement read in part.
“The consignment was found to belong to two passengers, who were identified and subsequently arrested. The …. are currently in custody, pending processing and arraignment in court, while the exhibits have been secured at the station.”

NPS said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating across the country. The Service also praised the vigilance of the officers involved and reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the illegal drug trade.
Ongoing crackdown on narcotics
The latest incident adds to a growing list of similar operations carried out by law enforcement officers in recent weeks. On Sunday, officers in Kajiado arrested two suspects and recovered 46 rolls of suspected cannabis at Namelok shopping centre following a public tip-off.
Earlier in the month, police in Nakuru seized at least 30 rolls of bhang during a Mashujaa Day operation, while officers in Nairobi’s Umoja estate confiscated 20 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis and 3,000 prepared rolls from a suspected drug peddler.
Security agencies have intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations along major highways and border routes often used by traffickers. Authorities say the crackdown targets not only drug transporters but also distribution networks within towns and rural areas.
