Police intensify crackdown on illicit brew in Nandi
By Joel Masibo, January 10, 2026The National Police Service (NPS) officers from the Nandi South Sub-County on Friday, January 9, 2026, conducted an operation against illicit alcohol in Kapkerer Location.
According to a statement released by the NPS on Saturday, January 10, 2026, the operation targeted Kipsigak, Baibai, Chepsis, and Kipkurui villages. During the raid, officers destroyed a total of 3,010 litres of Kangara and dismantled brewing apparatus found concealed in bushes, along rivers, and within forested areas.

”Additionally, 60 litres of Chang’aa were recovered from a residential property and secured as evidence. Suspected brewers fled the scene upon noticing the police presence. Investigations are proceeding at full speed to apprehend the suspects,” the statement reads in part.
As significant strides continue to be made in the fight against illicit drugs and harmful substances across the country, the National Police Service has committed to safeguarding public health.
Intensified crackdown
On Thursday, January 8, 2026, officers from Busia Police Station, led by County Commander Abdille Ahmed, CP, conducted a targeted operation against illicit alcohol in the Nasewa area.
During the operation, one person of interest was apprehended after she was found in possession of approximately 80 litres of a substance believed to be Chang’aa at her homestead. In addition, 1,725 litres of Kangara were recovered and subsequently destroyed. The person of interest was escorted to Busia Police Station, awaiting arraignment in court.
On the same day, the Western Regional Police Commander, Issa Mohamed, AIG, led a multi-agency security team in a crackdown operation against illicit brews. The operation targeted Shikumu Location in Kakamega County and Kilingili Location in Vihiga County, covering Lwanaswa, Kaluni, and Ishieywe villages.
The team destroyed 50,000 litres of Kangara, dismantled 613 brewing apparatus, recovered 350 litres of Chang’aa, and apprehended eight persons of interest. They were placed in custody for processing and subsequent arraignment in court. The exhibits were secured and stored at a police facility.
The National Police Service maintains that it remains steadfast in its resolve to combat illicit alcohol and to safeguard public health and safety, while members of the public are urged to continue cooperating with the police by providing information on drug and alcohol-related activities.
