Police dismantle suspected Al-Shabaab camp in Wajir

Police in a coordinated security operation in the Digdiga area in Wajir County have dismantled a suspected Al-Shabaab camp at Qanjara Durow following a fierce exchange of fire with suspected militants.

Taking it to their social media handles on Friday, May 22, 2026, the National Police Service has noted in a statement that security teams established a forward presence near Gel Qad Junction before advancing towards Qanjara Durow, where they encountered armed suspects. A heavy firefight ensued, during which the officers overpowered the militants and secured the area.

“A coordinated security operation in the Digdiga general area has led to the dismantling of a suspected militant camp at Qanjara Durow, following a fierce exchange of fire between security personnel and suspected militants,” NPS stated.

Assorted materials recovered

The NPS has further said that following the operation, the camp was fully dismantled after additional suspected militants were neutralised. A thorough search of the site uncovered assorted materials believed to be linked to militant activities. These included communication equipment, improvised explosive device (IED) components, uniforms, ammunition, food supplies, and other logistical items.

All recovered materials were secured for forensic examination as investigations continue to establish further links and operational details.

The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities and maintaining sustained operations aimed at disrupting and degrading extremist and criminal networks across the region.

Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through emergency lines as well as via the toll-free lines.
