Police detain man found stealing coffee in Nyeri
By Arnold Ngure, September 14, 2025Police officers in Nyeri have arrested a man with at least 15 kilogrammes of coffee cherries.
The arrest, according to the police, came after a farm owner reported that a man had invaded his coffee farm and was picking coffee cherries.
The authorities revealed that with the help of members of the public, they managed to apprehend the farm intruder, who had picked at least 15kgs of the cash crop at the time of his arrest.

“Today, 14th September 2025, police officers at Witima Police Station received a report from a resident of Kagumo Village in Nyeri County that he had encountered an unknown individual harvesting coffee on his farm,” the National Police statement read in part.

“The officers responded promptly and, with the assistance of members of the public, managed to apprehend the suspect, who had picked approximately 15 kilograms of coffee.”
“The suspect is currently in police custody, awaiting arraignment in court. National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to serve and protect the public,” police said.
Criminal gangs
The arrest comes just days after seven people were arrested by the police on September 12, 2025, over involvement in criminal gangs in the neighbouring Kirinyaga County.
“A major crackdown in Kutus town on 12th September 2025 saw police from Kirinyaga East and Mwea East sub-counties arrest seven suspected gang members hiding in the Maisha Kamili area, where housebreaking tools, knives, and pangas were seized,” police said.
“The suspects were placed in custody for processing and arraignment in court to face relevant charges. The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to sustaining such operations to dismantle criminal gangs and safeguard communities.”
During the operation, which led to the recovery of assorted weapons, police urged members of the public to continue sharing information to improve security in the region.
“The NPS further urges the public to continue sharing actionable intelligence, noting that collaboration between security agencies and the public remains key to winning the fight against crime,” police stated.
