Police deploy multi-agency team on major highways ahead of festive season
By Joel Masibo, November 21, 2025The National Police Service (NPS) has officially launched a comprehensive two-month 2025 Festive Season National Road Safety Awareness Campaign to sensitise road users as festivities begin.
The campaign was officially launched on Friday, November 21, 2025, at a Nairobi hotel under the banner themed “Road Safety and Precaution During the Festive Season in Kenya.”
Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, through his representative at the launch, Road Safety Liaison Officer, Boniface Otieno, SSP, assured the public of the Police Service’s full support and commitment to the campaign.
IG Kanja’s message
He announced that multi-agency compliance teams, comprising the National Police Service, the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA), and the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Sacco stakeholders, will be deployed along major highways to ensure adherence to road safety rules.
Furthermore, Otieno reminded travellers to only board vehicles equipped with seat belts, plan their journeys to avoid peak rush hours, and report any road violations to the police at the roadblocks.
Additionally, Otieno encouraged drivers to avoid speeding, refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and manage fatigue effectively by taking regular breaks. He also urged motorcycle riders and their pillion passengers to wear helmets at all times.

At the same time, the NPS, through a statement, urged all road users to exercise caution during the entire festive season.
”The campaign partners urge all Kenyans to adopt responsible behaviour on the roads during the festive season. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Every journey should begin and end safely. By working together, we can ensure this festive period remains a time of joy, not tragedy,” the Service said.
The launch brought together key partners, including the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the National Police Service – Traffic Department, Notewise Music Hub, FIE-Consult, Che-Dreamakers Events, and other key road safety partners.
Festive period fatalities
The festive period, from November to January, historically records high numbers of fatalities and serious injuries. This is due to increased travel, night driving, drink-driving, speeding, and driver fatigue, with children and young people being especially vulnerable.
However, according to NPS, most of these crashes are preventable, as they result from common behaviours that can be changed through greater awareness and stronger enforcement. The campaign aims to promote national awareness of festive-season road risks, encourage responsible behaviour among all road users, and strengthen partnerships between government agencies, the private sector, and civil society.
