Police confirm 11 deaths and 63 injuries after Saba Saba protests
By Lutta Njomo, July 7, 2025The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that 11 people lost their lives in various parts of the country during Saba Saba protests on Monday, July 7, 2025.
In a statement issued by police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, NPS indicated that all 11 were civilians, while 11 others also sustained injuries.
According to the statement, 52 security officers were also injured while maintaining order during the Saba Saba Day commemoration.
Notably, police revealed that Manyatta Member of Parliament, Gitonga Mukunji, was arrested. NPS did not immediately reveal why he was apprehended.
“Regrettably, preliminary reports indicate fatalities, injuries, damage to motor vehicles, and several incidents of looting as detailed below. Additionally, a number of suspects have been arrested, including Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta Constituency,” the NPS statement read in part.

Other arrests and destruction
Besides Mukunji, Muchiri Nyaga informed the public that 567 civilians were also arrested.
Three government vehicles and four public owned were also destroyed during the protests.
“Each reported incident will be subject to further investigation, in accordance with the law,” NPS insisted.
Police demonstrated professionalism
NPS lauded the security officers for demonstrating restraint and professionalism while dealing with protesters despite provocation.
Nonetheless, the police pleaded with the public to share information regarding criminals who took advantage of the protests to loot and destroy property.
“The NPS also commends its officers for demonstrating exceptional restraint and professionalism in the face of sustained violence and provocation by criminals who infiltrated the protests and encourage anyone with information about individuals involved in criminal activities who are still at large to come forward and share that information to report to the nearest police station or contact us via our toll-free numbers: 999, 911, 112, or #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203).”
