Police come under fire after arrested brothers found dead
Police are on the spot after the bodies of two brothers, who went missing on Sunday evening after they were arrested in Kianjokoma in Embu North, were later found in the Embu Level 5 Mortuary.
The two, Benson Njiru Ndwiga 22 and Emmanuel Mutura Ndwiga 19, were arrested at Kianjokoma, about 1km from their residence on allegations of violating curfew regulations but their bodies were later found dumped at Kibugu Trading Centre, more than 30km from the scene.
Yesterday, a sombre mood engulfed the village, following the reports, with relatives saying the two had not been seen since Sunday. The matter was reported at Manyatta police station.
“They were arrested at Kianjokoma, about one kilometre from their home. The family reported the matter at Manyatta police station but they refused to help.
We then decided to report the matter at Runyenjes Police Station where a detective informed us they had collected two bodies,” said Felix Njagi, a relative.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer then directed them to Embu Level 5 Hospital where they went and positively identified the bodies.
Defended officers
Embu East sub-county Police Commander Emily Garuiya yesterday defended her officers, claiming the victims could have jumped out of the moving police vehicle.
“The two were arrested on Sunday around midnight after they were found beyond curfew hours, together with eight other suspects,” Garuiya said.
She, however, said investigations had been launched to establish what transpired adding that a post-mortem examination will also be conducted.
“While the suspects were being escorted to Manyatta Police Station the two jumped from a fast moving vehicle without the knowledge of police officers only to realise when they were counting the suspects,” she added.
She further said when her officers went back they found the bodies of the deceased on the road and they were collected and taken to the mortuary.
The two students were home on long holiday and operated a pork business in Kianjokoma market.
“When we found them in mortuary, they had no phones or money in their pockets, who took them? Njagi asked.
The deceased men’s uncle Felix Thiga said one of them had about Sh10,000 from the day’s sales when they were arrested.
Benson was a student at Kabarak University while his brother Emmanuel Mutura was a student in Don Bosco Technology Training Institute Karen in Nairobi.
Their parents, John Ndwiga Kamunyuti and Catherine Wawira are now accusing the officers of killing their children and are now hiding the information.
Cover-up
Police action pointed to a well calculated cover up as they tossed the family members from one station to another even after they knew the two were already dead.
Susan Wangari, a former area MCA, said they are frustrated by the actions of the police calling for thorough investigation into the matter.
Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Cecily Mbarire has urged authorities to do thorough investigation and tell the people what happened to the two young boys.
Mbarire said it is not adding up for police to purport that they suspect the two jumped out police vehicle and died citing that is mere lie.
“You cannot just say they jumped out of police car and died all, how now, it is not adding up,” Mbarire said.
