Police blame driver negligence for mishap
Police have blamed driver negligence for the loss of 10 lives Saturday in an accident at Mbooni in Makueni county.
The accident at Kwa Mbisu area of Mbooni West sub-county left 12 people dead and injured.
The injured are recovering at Mbooni Sub-county Hospital.
Area Sub-county Commissioner Stanislaus Apwoka accused the driver of careless driving and urged motorists to be careful during the festive period.
Regional Police Commander Joseph ole Napeiyan said the matatu was headed to Machakos when the accident happened around Kikima. The driver of the matatu belonging to Makos Sacco was reportedly speeding at the time of accident.
“It occurred today (Saturday)at around 6.30pm at Nthungoni Red Sea Area on Kikima – Machakos Road involving a 14-seater matatu belonging to Makos Sacco.

Ten passengers lost their lives on the spot while seven others sustained serious injuries and were taken to Mbooni sub-county hospital in critical condition,” added Napeiyan.
County Chief Officer in charge of Health Dr Stephen Ndolo confirmed 10 victims of the accident were received at the Makueni Hospital.
“We received 10 casualties from the accident. Two are in critical condition and we are preparing them for theatre. We dispatched additional blood to Mbooni Sub County Hospital to manage the situation,” he stated.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr sent condolences to the bereaved. He called on drivers to be cautious on the road in this period of celebrations. At the same time, members of public were cautioned against boarding overcrowded vehicles.
