Security situation in Marsabit

Marsabit County has in recent years experienced recurring cases of livestock theft and armed violence linked to banditry. Security incidents in the region have often been associated with competition over grazing land and water resources, as well as the circulation of illegal firearms.

Stock theft has been reported to affect pastoralist communities across the county, with stolen livestock sometimes integrated into herds or moved across borders, complicating recovery efforts. The incidents have also been linked to retaliatory attacks and loss of lives in some cases.

Authorities have previously noted that such activities continue to disrupt livelihoods in a region where pastoralism remains a key economic activity.

Ongoing security operations

The National Police Service Kenya has intensified operations across northern Kenya counties as part of wider efforts to address banditry and livestock theft. These operations have been supported by multi-agency teams conducting patrols, recovery missions, and community engagements.

Security agencies have also reported the recovery of livestock and seizure of illegal firearms in various operations targeting criminal networks operating in pastoral regions.

The service stated that it remains committed to maintaining security and ensuring that individuals linked to criminal activities are processed according to the law. Investigations into the Marsabit incident are ongoing as authorities pursue additional leads connected to the case.
