More than 38,000 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) learners, parents and teachers in Uasin Gishu county are set to benefit after the devolved unit entered into a partnership with Colgate Palmolive East Africa to promote oral health.

The programme dubbed ‘Koti Oral Health Care’ is aimed at benefiting learners in ECDE centres through inculcating good oral hygiene practices at an early age.

Governor Jonathan Bii (pictured) said his administration will prioritise the health and welfare of young learners, recognising them as a valuable investment in their long-term dental health.

Good oral hygiene

According to Bii, the initiative is backed by the Kenya National Oral Health Policy 2022-2030, adding that his administration extended their collaborative efforts with Colgate Palmolive, on a 50-50 funding model, to ensure learners in all 673 ECDEs receive training on good oral hygiene practices. “We want to ensure that the Koti Oral Health Care program is not only realised but also impactful. We have agreed on a 50-50 co-funding model, with Colgate. Our focus will be on providing pupils with toothbrushes, toothpaste and training in proper handwashing techniques,” said Bii.

He said the initiative will benefit the childrens’ physical health and also establish a foundation for a lifetime of good dental habits and overall well-being. “Due to the fact that only 32 per cent of children brush twice daily, these oral health issues persist into adulthood. This is a collective responsibility and I urge parents to be fully involved,” said Bii.

County Health Executive Abraham Serem said the programme with Colgate Palmolive East Africa will primarily focus on ECDE centres, therefore, the need to emphasise on the importance of oral hygiene, proper nutrition and preventive measures against tooth decay.
