Over 2000 IDs lost in Nyandarua after Gen Z protest, PS Kipsang says

Over 2,000 ready identification cards (IDs) awaiting collection by owners have been lost in Nyandarua County in less than one month.
Immigration PS Belio Kipsang said 1,300 IDs are thought to have been destroyed when the Nyandarua Central sub-county registration bureau was burnt by demonstrators on Wednesday this week.
Another 900 IDs were stolen at the Nyandarua West registration offices in Oljoroorok town. Area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Josephine Kihara said the documents were stolen when the offices were broken into on May 29, 2025.
Kipsang, who was in Nyandarua to assess the damage visited on government installations by the rioters during last Wednesday’s demonstrations, called for thorough investigations to ascertain whether the 1,300 IDs were actually burnt or had been removed before the building was set on fire.
He expressed fear that the vital documents could be used for criminal activities.
“I urge those who had applied for IDs in the two offices – Ol Kalou and Oljoroorok- to report to police in case their IDs are used for criminal activities,” the PS said. The registration offices in Ol Kalou lost everything, including two vital machines each worth Ksh1 million.
Kipsang condemned the targeting of government installations and security officers during the demonstrations, saying the behaviour cannot be allowed to go on.
Condoling families that lost loved ones in the Wednesday mayhem, Kipsang said 300 police officers were injured countrywide. He described the extent and cost of the damage to government properties in Ol Kalou as immeasurable
The mayhem in Ol Kalou, which is Nyandarua County’s head office town, occurred after police shot dead a protester during Wednesday’s demos.
Residents’ anger
Both the county and national government lost properties worth millions of shillings after offices and about 30 vehicles, both running and grounded, were burnt.
Meanwhile, three livestock theft suspects died after angry residents set a police station where they were being held on fire in Kinangop, Nyandarua, on Thursday night.
Nyandarua Central DCC Michael Oleltua, who received the Immigration PS on behalf of the County Commissioner Abdirisak Jaldesa, said the mob that was baying for the blood of the suspects overpowered the police at about 7 pm and set the police station on fire.
The DCC said another person was admitted to the hospital after being shot by police during the melee.
According to a source, residents felt the cattle theft incident was mishandled, triggering people’s anger. An officer is being investigated for releasing the recovered animals back to their owners without recording statements from the people.
This led residents to think the officer wanted to set the suspects free without charging them.
The bodies were taken to the Engineer County hospital.
