Opposition leaders have said that the late Albert Ojwang’ was brought into the Central Police Station when he had already been assaulted elsewhere.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the leaders indicated that the police version of the story from arrest in Homa Bay to the transfer of his body to the Nairobi funeral Home on Sunday, June 8, 2025, had gaps.

“There are 26 hours that remain unaccounted for between Homa Bay and Nairobi. 26 hours when a healthy man, having lunch with his young family, arrived, according to many sources, bleeding with serious injuries before being declared dead on arrival at the Mbagathi Hospital on June 8, 2025,” the opposition leaders’ statement reads.

Booked elsewhere?

While the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, stated that Ojwang’ was booked at the Central Police Station from Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay, questions arose at the Senate when senators demanded answers on whether the 31-year-old teacher had been previously booked at the DCI headquarters.

Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni challenged the Director of DCI, Amin Mohamed, to produce CCTV footage of his officers interrogating Ojwang’.

The leaders equally demanded that the CCTV footage of Ojwang’ being brought to the Station be made public.

“Central Police Station in Nairobi has CCTV coverage. We demand to know where the footage showing Albert being brought in and leaving the station is, and whether it has been provided to the family lawyers,” the statement reads.

“If there is no footage, we demand to know who ordered the cameras to be switched off.”

“When Albert was picked up from Homa Bay, he had no physical injuries. Indeed, he was having lunch with his wife. We demand to know who inflicted the grievous and extensive injuries on his body.”

Solitary confinement

Additionally, the opposition leaders demanded to be told why the deceased had to be transported over 300 kilometres away from Homa Bay just to be investigated on a civil matter.

The leaders equally took issue with the police statement that Ojwang’ was put in solitary confinement, urging clarity on why he was detained alone.

“We demand to know why Albert was moved from Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay to Nairobi over 300 kilometres away from the alleged area of incident, and specifically to the Central Police Station on June 7, 2025, and which officers accompanied him by name and rank,” the leaders demanded.

“It has been reported that Albert was in solitary confinement. Why was Albert considered a high-risk criminal to be confined in solitary? We demand to be shown the cell register to determine whether he was with other cellmates or he was in solitary confinement.”
