Oparanya describes December sports tournaments as a catalyst for social and economic development

Taking to X on Sunday, December 28, 2025, Oparanya shared the honour of joining President William Ruto at Kadika Grounds, Suna East Constituency, Migori County, during the finals of a tournament hosted by the National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
In his remarks, the former Kakamega County Governor said such holiday tournaments, often hosted by political leaders, play a pivotal role in strengthening social and economic development in the country.
Holiday tournaments importance
”Such initiatives reaffirm our commitment to investing in youth, strengthening community bonds, and leveraging sports as a catalyst for social and economic development,” Oparanya shared.
He also highlighted the importance of such initiatives in grassroots sports development. ”The tournament beautifully demonstrated the unifying power of sports and underscored the critical role of grassroots sports development in nurturing talent, promoting cohesion, and empowering our communities. It was inspiring to witness leaders and residents come together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to celebrate athletic excellence,” Oparanya said.

Junet Mohamed also took the chance to reveal to Suna East residents that he intends the next edition of the tournament, named after him, will be bigger and better.
”To Suna East sportsmen, sportswomen and constituents, we look forward to next year’s tournament, which will be staged in our grand new stadium currently under uplift, the Migori Stadium,” Junet said.
Present at the finals were: President William Ruto, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Oburu Odinga, Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Ahmed Abdulahi, Migori County Governor Ochillo Ayacko, ODM Chair Gladys Wanga, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, among others.

Broad-based politics
The Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) also weighed in on the current working framework between the Kenya Kwanza regime and ODM in the broad-based government. ”All the leaders who joined me to celebrate young upcoming talents during the Finals of Hon. Junet Mohamed Tournament 2025. We remain solidly behind Broad-Based Government and also solidly, faithfully, and boldly behind the ODM Party Leader, Dr Oburu Odinga.” Junet Mohamed said.
