Onyonka: How apologising to DJ Evolve changed Babu Owino’s political path
By Mabonga Makhanu, May 6, 2026Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has opened up about how Embakasi East MP Babu Owino regained political momentum after apologising and taking responsibility for DJ Evolve.
Speaking at his Utawala home on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, during a condolence visit by a section of Kisii leaders following the demise of his mother, Terresia Nyaboke, the outspoken senator recalled how he was once sent by the late Raila Odinga to advise Babu Owino ahead of a 2022 election.
Onyonka said that Raila had reached out to him with concerns that Babu Owino risked losing his seat due to the controversy surrounding the DJ Evolve incident.
He explained that he was tasked with guiding the youthful MP on how to rebuild his public image and reconnect with voters in times when he was being haunted by the DJ Evolve incident.

According to Onyonka, he advised Babu Owino to take responsibility for his actions by reaching out to DJ Evolve, apologising, and committing to support him throughout his life.
He noted that Babu followed this advice, an act he believes played a key role in restoring public confidence in his leadership. Which eventually lead to him being reelected
The senator expressed pride in Babu Owino for taking the necessary steps, saying the move not only demonstrated accountability but also helped reshape his political path.

“One day, Raila called me and asked me to do one thing—to go and talk to Babu Owino and advise him on how he would get re-elected, because Raila thought he was going to lose the election. I told Babu, “I understand what happened. Look for that young man (DJ Evolve), tell him that you are sorry, and assure him that you will take care of him.” He has done that, and I am so proud of him,” Onyonka said.

This comes a day after Babu Owino himself came out during an interview, giving an update of how far he has come with Dj Evolve, who, according to him, he is now able to speak with and will soon walk with.

“I have been taking care of DJ Evolve’s medical bills. I have taken loans from banks and Saccos, and to date, I have spent close to KSh 70 million on them. I spend Ksh500,000 on his care every month. DJ Evolve is now able to talk,” Babu said.
