One shot dead, gun recovered as police exchange fire with Dandora gang
One person of interest has been shot dead and a firearm recovered after police officers engaged a gang in a shootout in Dandora.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers from Dandora Police Station were on patrol when they encountered three young men allegedly robbing members of the public along Councillor Opundo Road.
Police said the officers challenged the suspects to surrender, but one of them drew a firearm and opened fire, prompting officers to return fire.
During the exchange, one suspect was fatally injured while the other two fled on foot towards the Maili Saba area.
“While on patrol the officers encountered a gang of three young men actively robbing members of the public along Councillor Opundo Road. Upon being challenged to surrender, one of the suspects drew a firearm and started firing at the officers, prompting a decisive response. One suspect, was fatally injured, while his two accomplices escaped on foot towards the Maili Saba area,” DCI stated on Friday, May 1, 2026.
A search on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of a Tokarev pistol loaded with two rounds of 9mm ammunition, a military knife and two mobile phones.
Authorities said the scene has since been processed, and the body moved to the Nairobi City Mortuary pending identification and a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched a manhunt for the two suspects who escaped, as investigations into the incident continue.
