Ol Kalou by-elections: DCP’s Kamau and UDA’s Muchina cast votes as voting continues

Voting is underway across Ol Kalou Constituency after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) opened polling stations at 6 a.m. for the highly anticipated parliamentary by-election, with the two leading candidates, DCP’s Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru and UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyaga, among the early voters.

In a statement on his X handle on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after casting his vote, UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyaga commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise, urging residents to turn out in large numbers and participate in the democratic process.

“This morning, I have proudly exercised my democratic right by casting my vote. I thank God that the voting process has been peaceful, orderly, and smooth. I sincerely thank the IEBC officials, security personnel, party agents, and every stakeholder for ensuring a calm and transparent voting process,” Muchina said.

He has appealed to the people of Ol Kalou to continue turning out in large numbers, asking for their support at the ballot while emphasising the need for unity and peaceful coexistence throughout the election.

DCP-backed candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru also cast his vote, encouraging residents to exercise their democratic right and motivate others to do the same.

In a statement after casting his vote, Sammy commended the progress of the polls, urging voters to continue turning out to exercise their constitutional mandate.

“Voting is an expression of our commitment to ourselves, one another, and this constituency. Thank you for coming out early this morning in large numbers and for maintaining peace. I have exercised my democratic right. Make sure you reach out to someone and confirm that they have voted too,” Waweru said.

Voting closes at 5:00 am

Long queues were witnessed at several polling stations as voters arrived early to cast their ballots. Polling is expected to continue until 5 pm, with all voters in the queue by the official closing time set to be allowed to vote.

The Ol Kalou by-election has drawn national attention, with the contest viewed as a significant political test ahead of the 2027 general election.

Security has been intensified across the constituency, with police maintaining a heavy presence to ensure the exercise remains peaceful, orderly and credible.
