Okoth through, Andiego out as boxers register mixed results in the ring

Kenyan boxers registered contrasting results at the ongoing 12th edition of African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

While captain Nick Okoth reached the last eight, his deputy Elizabeth Andiego was bundled out of the tournament by Nigeria’s Esther Adejumola on Saturday’s night. Andiego lost 4-1.

Okoth who defeated Iyanga Moliko of Equatorial Guinea 5-0 in the men’s featherweight (57kg) on Thursday evening to reach the last-16 continued his exploits on Saturday after beating Angola’s Ernesto Gomes 5-0.

Also reaching the quarters is Kenya’s Bakari Hassan who edged out Moroccan Said Mortaji 3-2 on Saturday in the flyweight (52kg).  

Super heavyweight bout 

Late on Sunday, Boniface Maina was expected to take to the ring in the welterweight category to face Angola’s Alfonso Gomes in the quarter-finals.

Another bout in the quarter final stage will see Lorna Kusa also in the welterweight category fighting Nigeria’s Temitope Shogbamu. In the men’s category 2015 African Games bronze medallist Elly Ajowi (91kg) was to fight Nigeria’s Chukwudi Arinze in the super heavyweight category.

The other Kenyan match is expected involve Frederick Ramogi and Morocco’s Mohamed Firisse in the super heavyweight bout.                                         

In the 2015 tournament held in Congo, Brazzaville, Kenya bagged two bronze medals through Ajowi and  Okoth.
