Official defies Matiang’i order to arrest principal

Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Maalim Mohamed has contradicted his boss, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i over the attack on three school buses in Kerio Valley that claimed one life on Thursday.
Despite Matiang’i announcing on Friday that Tot Secondary School principal Simon Mahongu be arrested for flouting the Ministry of Education directive on night travel, Mohamed has sensationally claimed that the principal will not be arrested.
Speaking yesterday, Mohamed said the school head will not be arrested, as the move will spark more tension in the school and surrounding community.
“Principal is at his work station carrying out his daily tasks. We do not want to create unnecessary tension, as the students are already traumatised following the attack,” said Mohamed.
He assured the students of their safety, adding that the school is being manned round-the-clock by armed security personnel.
“We have already engaged experts, who are counselling the students and teaching fraternity,” said the administrator.
He said it would be practically impossible to arrest the principal at this examination period, as he is a centre manager.
Mohamed has since convened a meeting with all County Commissioners and principals from all the banditry prone counties in Rift Valley in preparation for the forthcoming national examination.
