The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has extended special gratitude to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka during the commemoration of the late party leader Raila Odinga’s birthday, marking the first such occasion since his death.

In a statement shared across the party’s social media platforms on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, ODM announced that the event marked Raila Odinga’s 80+1 birthday and served as a moment to celebrate his life, legacy, and enduring impact on Kenya and beyond.

The party leadership, through its National Executive Committee and National Secretariat, expressed appreciation to Kenyans from all walks of life, friends across Africa and the world, and institutions that stood with ODM and the Odinga family following the passing of Raila Odinga.

The statement acknowledged the overwhelming support received during the period of mourning.

ODM specifically conveyed gratitude to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Azimio la Umoja fraternity, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, for their solidarity and support during the difficult time.

“ODM is grateful to the fourth Head of State, the Azimio la Umoja fraternity led by H.E. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, all ODM county governments and assemblies, Parliament, ODM county and branch committees, the media, and millions of Kenyans at home and abroad who honoured Baba’s life and legacy. We salute the ODM fraternity as we appeal for continued unity and resolve.” ODM said.

The party also recognised the role played by ODM county governments, county assemblies, Parliament, party committees at both county and branch levels, and the media in honouring Raila Odinga’s life and legacy.

The statement further acknowledged President William Ruto and the Government of Kenya for the dignity and support accorded to the Odinga family during the mourning period.

ODM also appreciated the Government of India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for facilitating the repatriation of Raila Odinga’s body to Kenya.

Special recognition was extended to Mama Ida Odinga and the entire Odinga family as the nation marked Raila Odinga’s first birthday without his physical presence. The party noted that the late leader’s ideals, vision, and contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey continue to inspire millions.

ODM concluded by saluting its members and supporters across the country and abroad, calling for continued unity and resolve as the party seeks to uphold the values and principles championed by its late leader.

Uhuru’s role

This comes at a time when the party is grappling with internal wrangles, with the Secretary General Edwin Sifuna revealing the role played by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta during the 2022 General Election in support of Raila Odinga. According to Edwin Sifuna, Uhuru Kenyatta provided financial support for Azimio agents during the exercise.

Uhuru’s ties with Raila

Uhuru Kenyatta’s close relationship with the late Raila Odinga was also evident following Raila’s death. He was the first political leader to visit Kang’o ka Jaramogi after the burial and remained behind even after the ceremony.
