ODM flags Orengo resignation letter as fake

By , August 4, 2025

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has dismissed a letter circulating online claiming that Siaya Governor James Orengo has resigned from office.

The forged letter, bearing the official letterhead of the Siaya County Government and Orengo’s name and signature, announced his immediate resignation, citing health concerns and the need for a smooth leadership transition. It was addressed to the County Assembly Speaker and copied to various county offices. However, the document was quickly flagged as fake by both county officials and the ODM party.

“We can AUTHORITATIVELY state the letter below us FAKE. Ignore it and FOCUS,” ODM said in a statement posted on X.

ODM-government tensions ease

The emergence of the fake resignation comes amid a recent political thaw between Governor Orengo and President William Ruto, following a State House meeting on June 5, 2025. Brokered by ODM party leader Raila Odinga, the meeting signaled a shift in strategy for Orengo, who had previously been critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Following the engagement, Orengo announced a raft of development projects for Siaya County, including the construction of the Siaya County Referral Hospital Complex and the upgrade of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, spearheaded by the Kenya Defence Forces. His collaboration with the government was praised as pragmatic, with Raila urging ODM leaders to prioritize development over political grandstanding.

The fake letter attempted to undermine this progress, suggesting internal turmoil and Orengo’s inability to fulfill his duties.

“I announce my resignation from the office of the Governor of Siaya County, effective immediately,” the letter read in part. “After consultation with my family and medical professionals, it has become clear I am unable to continue the demanding duties of the Governor’s office.”

ODM, however, maintains the letter is a forgery. Governor Orengo has yet to make a direct statement.
