Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader Godfrey Osotsi has issued a scathing condemnation of the UDA-led government, warning that the recent killing of Albert Ojwang could mark a breaking point in the political truce between the two parties.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Osotsi accused state actors of orchestrating Ojwang’s arrest and death, and demanded the immediate dismissal of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

“We signed an MoU with UDA and agreed that we are not going to have abductions and killings like this one. If we do not get proper answers from the UDA government, we will consider this as a breach of the MoU we have with UDA,” Osotsi said.

The lawmaker’s comments came amid public outrage following the suspicious death of Albert Ojwang, a political blogger who was arrested days before his lifeless body was discovered.

Ojwang was said to have been targeted for comments he had made online that were critical of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.

On that, Osotsi claimed that the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death point to a disturbing pattern of silencing dissent through force and intimidation—a path he warned the country had painfully experienced before.

“This young man had been arrested because he had posted something bad about the DIG. This matter is very serious,” Osotsi said, his voice rising in anger.

“We cannot allow police to mislead this country that the young man hit his head on the wall. That narrative is not only offensive but also deeply insulting to the intelligence of Kenyans.”

He went further to call for the immediate removal of DIG Eliud Lagat from office, accusing him of presiding over a rogue security apparatus.

“We want to see action from the UDA government on the issue of the Deputy Inspector General of Police—by now, he should not be in office. ODM is very serious about this. We are a party that believes in protecting the lives of Kenyans,” Osotsi insisted.

According to reports, Ojwang was picked up by unidentified individuals believed to be police officers shortly after publishing posts deemed unfavourable to the police leadership.

Days later, his body was found under suspicious circumstances.

Police have since claimed that Ojwang died after hitting his head on a wall while in custody — a statement that has been widely dismissed by human rights groups and political leaders alike.

Osotsi, on that too, warned that the ODM party, unlike UDA, which is yet to push for closure on the matter, will not remain passive while Kenyans are subjected to fear and repression.

He added that the matter requires swift closure from all in UDA, including the president himself, insisting that allowing such abhorrent cases to vanish simply because the orchestrator is likely a senior government official is not and will not be countenanced.

“Even through the President, we are beginning to see the return of intolerance in this country. This cannot be allowed. It is unacceptable. We must stand firm against the return of state-sponsored brutality.”
