Closing on Cherargei’s bill

Submission of views on the proposed extension of the current five-year term limit for all elective seats to seven years will be closed today.

Kenyans had been granted until Thursday, October 24, 2024, to submit their opinions on the bill sponsored by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei.

“The bill proposes to amend Article 136 of the Constitution, which provides for the election of the President, to increase the term of office of the President from five years to seven years,” the bill states.

The bill which has been proposed via the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2024, seeks to create a raft of changes including creating the office of the Prime Minister who will be appointed by the President from among members of the party or coalition of majority parties in Parliament.

In this capacity, the prime minister will head the government and take responsibility of managing day to day administration of the government.

Reactions on Gachagua’s case

More reactions are expected to pour in after impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua filed a fresh petition challenging Deputy Chief Justice Philomen Mwilu’s decision to appoint a three-judge bench to hear and determine his case.

Gachagua, through his lawyers disputed the appointment of two judges; Justice Eric Ogolla, and Anthony Mrima citing conflict of interest.

He explained that Ogolla had close ties to President William Ruto after his wife landed a state job. Justice Mrima, on the other hand, is said to have close ties with Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.

“The honourable Judge Mrima a nd the fourth respondent, Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi are very close friends. The respondent attended the wedding ceremony of the judge and he took a photograph with him,” the lawyers argued.
